The Nazca Lines, also known in scientific contexts as “geoglyphs,” are one of the most important legacies of Peru’s ancient pre-Inca cultures. Located in the valleys of Palpa and Nazca, in the department of Ica, this vast expanse of desert plains displays enormous geometric figures across its sands which, in perfect harmony, form drawings of animals, plants, objects, human beings, and deities.
Regarding the origin and meaning of these lines, both archaeologists and researchers of paranormal phenomena have proposed various theories. Some interpret them as a massive astronomical calendar; others see them as a site for water worship built by the Paracas and Nazca cultures.
