Ayahuasca gets you high primarily due to Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a powerful psychedelic, but it’s the Harmala Alkaloids (MAOIs) from the Banisteriopsis caapi vine that make it orally active, preventing DMT from being broken down by the body’s enzymes and enabling its effects on serotonin receptors, leading to intense visionary, emotional, and spiritual experiences.
